We headed out of Port Everglades, Ft lauderdale at the crack of 9am today. It was a last minute trip we put together as we actually had some free time today. We loaded up the baitwell with a few throws of the cast net with some perfect size finger mullet which were just hanging out all over the marina. The plan was to run out and find some Dolphin "Mahi-Mahi" and then give it our first shot at day-time swording. We put the lines in and started blind trolling around 300 and headed east. We picked up 3 - Tuna and a single Dolphin in 30-45 minutes of trolling. After that, we pulled in the lines and ran for the sword grounds which are about 20 miles offshore, way in the Gulf Stream. Just as we were getting set to make the 1st drop, my wife says, "look at that weedline"... so we run over and instantly get covered up with hungry dolphin. We added another 4 or 5 in the box and then it was back to the swording..
We made 4 deep-drops and had no problem with holding bottom with close to 2000 feet of line out. Everything seemed to work fine and we didnt have any problems with the 2 line spread. We tryed at different depths ranging from 1400, 1500, 1600, and 1700 moving north each time but I guess it wasn't our day with the swords. Atleast we got to practice and figured out the method of getting the baits down so next time we will get em. After those 4 drops, it was time to head back home and on the run in, we spot a small 2x4 piece of yellow tarp .. it stood out so we went over to check it out. Figuring it was way to small to hold anything, i was going to just go by it but once again, my wife decided to toss out a live mullet and sure enough, it got slammed by a nice size Dolphin. After that it was the Dolphin fire drill with the schoo, of hungry fins surrounding the boat eating everything we had to offer at them.
We ended up having our best day fishing for sure and couldnt have asked for better conditions, maybe a 1' swell and flat calm seas!
The fins and tuna are out there in good numbers and they are hungry so go catch em up!
